DESIGN SERVICES

When a custom design is required I explore imaginative solutions, investigate concepts, call upon my knowledge of art history, color theory, cultural distinction and contemporary contextualization.  Sourcing among a range of materials and surface textures from multiple origins while carefully paying close attention to detail from production to its end result.  Creating bespoke works is the union of distilling client requests, open dialogue and collaborative efforts that ultimately allows for artwork that speaks to the environment it inhabits.

Rosewood Beijing, Guest Room Entry Vessel

The custom-designed ceramic vessel at each guest’s hotel room door pay homage to Chinese kung fu pulp comics, Lianhuanhua (linked images) or xiaorenshu (children’s books). The Chinese comic tradition began in Shanghai in the 1920’s and arguably even earlier, to Song dynasty scrolls. Decades later they were printing over a billion pocket-sized booklets, adapted from martial arts epics, folk tales, theater shows, popular films and read street side. The Communist party took an interest in lianhuanhua as they saw these comics as a tool for propaganda, mass education and a way to promote literacy. For seventy years lianhuanhua was among the most widely read literature in China until losing popularity in the 1990’s - marking the demise of this new form of artistic production. The Rosewood Beijing lianhuanhua vessels are finished in a blue and white glaze referencing the Ming dynasty.

Rosewood Phuket, villa entry sculpture

Perched on the peak of a Thai architectural finial (lamyong) is a large curving ornament called a chofah resembling the beak of a bird that represents Garuda, the bird creature depicting birth and heaven in Hindu mythology. This work alludes to the Thai architectural form and is modernized as a hand-hewn flame-like sculpture.

Rosewood Phuket, Mai Dining

Invoking the majestic quality of the Thai buffalos found throughout the countryside and referencing the pugilistic nature of the Muay Thai culture, this totem secretly nicknamed “the Bronx Bull” after Jake LaMotta, watches protectively from the poolside bar facing out toward the sea.

Rosewood Phuket, Villa

The creation of a collection of artist proof’s specific to the Phuket luxury resort hotel is the product of a close collaboration with the artist. Here, artist Alexandra Chermayeff collaborates on a collection of vibrant works on paper, using her method of gestural abstraction balanced with weight and lightness of color. The shapes created are reminiscent of water and movement - this language invokes a unique guest experience and creates a language that grounds the guest to the surrounding environment.

Rosewood Phuket, Arrival

At the arrival porte cochère, the elephant creates the very first impression, greeting each visitor with welcome by its powerful yet peaceful demeanor. In Thai culture, this majestic creature is honored and has served as a constant presence, respected and awed by the Thai people. Its garlands and bell details are garnishes used during ceremonial festivities. This piece is based on the romanticism, grandeur and elegance of the Cham elephants of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, capturing the essence of Southeast Asia.

Rosewood Phuket, Arrival

Flanking the hall entry toward reception is a pair of 2.5 meter open-weave bamboo Bonsai sculptures woven by Korakot Aromdee, using a technique taught to him by his grandfather, adopted from traditional kite-making or Kula. He weaves contemporary creations through interpreting this weaving method. Korakot is inspired by the environment, self-sustaining design and the use of natural crafting techniques derived from simple structural construction.
